Rise in the number of graduates taking up Early Years Intitial Teacher Training

The number of learners taking up the funded Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) has increased in the last two years, reveal new DfE statistics.
The survey will look at the impact of Covid-19 on the early years workforce from before the start of the pandemic until June 2021

According to the latest data, 582 learners took up the EYITT in the last academic year, compared to 487 in 2022/23 and 484 the year prior (2021/22). Upon completion of the EYITT, which is open to graduates, learners are granted early years teacher status.

Most trainees accessed the course through a school-centred initial teacher training provider rather than a university.

While the majority of trainees reported that the course helped their career development – the most common benefit was an increase in responsibilities – the data suggests the fact that the qualification does not provide qualified teacher status (QTS), remains a key challenge in increasing course take-up.
