And the latest article in our Caring for under-threes series, 'Snuggle up'
on pages 12-13, examines how physical closeness and cuddles are vital for babies and toddlers to develop confidence and security. Author Jennie Lindon believes that the lack of physical contact in some nurseries will harm young children's emotional development.
This is a theme that is further explored by Julian Grenier in 'A matter of opinion', page 24, where he details some compelling and contentious arguments about the role of men in childcare. One of the main obstacles to more men working in this sector is, of course, the climate of fear about accusations of child abuse.
Julian points out that children are not being cared for properly when male workers do not dare or are not allowed to cuddle children, and when they have to be constantly 'witnessed' during intimate care duties. We would welcome responses to Julian's opinions.
