Early years vocational qualification map revised

Careers & Training
The much-criticised occupational map showing vocational qualifications for the route into Education and Childcare has been updated by the Institute for Apprenticeships.

It follows a consultation that closed in January and received just 21 responses.

This is one of 15 maps that sets out the occupations with relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours within a route. They play an important role in identifying occupations for the development of apprenticeship standards and T level qualifications.

The draft map attracted criticism from sector bodies because it did not link the correct qualification with the correct area of work. For example, Level 3, which allows for staff to manage a setting under the EYFS, was aligned with ‘assistant’.

As a result of the consultation on the map, the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) has amended job titles and levels. It now refers to an early years assistant as a Level 2 and has replaced the title Early Years Professional with Early Years Teacher.
