Cress caterpillars

Growing cress caterpillars will develop skills of observation Resources

A small plastic rectangular-shaped container, cotton wool, cress seeds, pipe cleaners, thin card, black felt tip pens, sellotape and scissors

Step by step

* Line the tray with cotton wool.

* Get the children to add some water until the cotton wool becomes soggy.

* Hand out the cress seeds so that the children can explore them as you talk about size and shape.

* Scatter seeds on to the cotton wool.

* Cut out a face shape from the card and draw on features with a felt-tip pen.

* Sellotape this to the front of the tray.

* Cut the pipe cleaners in half and attach two to the tray as antennae.
