Play Wales, the national organisation for children's play, wants playworkers to be paid in line with teachers, writes its information officer Gill Evans. The Welsh Assembly Government was the first in the UK to adopt a play policy and Play Wales is pushing for a number of radical policies, which are: * Changes in the training, status and pay of playworkers so that they are trained to a higher level with a greater emphasis on reflective practice and facilitating children's freely chosen self-directed play.

* Changes in the training, status and pay of playworkers so that they are trained to a higher level with a greater emphasis on reflective practice and facilitating children's freely chosen self-directed play.

* Playworkers to have similar status and pay to teachers.

* Residential streets reclaimed for pedestrians and children's play.

* Protected habitat for natural environments where children play.

* School playgrounds that are stimulating.

* Raising public awareness on the importance of giving children time and space to play.

* Teachers and all other professionals who work directly with children to be trained in child development and play.
