Government commits £3.4m in funding to early language support programme to help 20,000 more children

A further 20,000 children in early years settings and schools, including those with SEND, are to benefit from the Government’s targeted support programme to overcome speech and language challenges.

Backed by £3.4 million this year, The Early Language Support for Every Child (ELSEC) programme deploys specialist teams across early years settings and primary schools to help identify and respond to children’s speech and language needs, with a focus on children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

It comes as recent reports suggest the Government is considering whether Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) should only apply to special school pupils.

What is the ELSEC programme?

Launched in 2023, the ELSEC has so far supported over 200 early years and primary school settings, trained over 3,000 setting staff and provided support to just over 20,000 pupils
