Position: Breakfast club supervisor at Thorntree Primary School in Glasgow

You've been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in honour of your outstanding achievement and commitment to education and the local community - how did you come to work at the school?

I started volunteering at the school 24 years ago, helping out in the classrooms and then joining the PTA. I moved to working in the school office on a temporary basis when a vacancy came up, which led to a permanent position. I also help out at the breakfast club, clean the school and do lots of fundraising.

Were you surprised to learn you had been chosen as a recipient of a BEM?

To me it doesn't feel like I am doing anything special. To be nominated by an HMIE inspector made it even more special as this is someone who doesn't know me.

Has the medal pride of place in your home?

I locked it away after I was presented with it last month by Glasgow's Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant, Councillor Sadie Doherty at a special school assembly. I will also be taking it to Buckingham Palace in the spring where I have been invited to meet the Queen.
