Catering for children in a nursery setting is a complicated business these days, for several reasons. Cases of food allergy and intolerances are on the rise, and nursery managers must take great care that children are not put in danger - recently we saw the tragic death of Thomas Egan, the baby with a milk allergy, at a Jigsaw nursery. The dietary needs of children from different religious and cultural backgrounds must be considered. And there are parents' preferences that nurseries need to be able to accommodate. So it is no simple matter to produce a healthy, balanced menu for all the children in your setting. Our new nutrition series, starting this week, aims to help hard-pressed nursery staff to do just this, with advice from Suzannah Oliver, well-known nutritionist and consultant to the Organix Children's Food Advisory Service, launched earlier this year.

Suzannah will look at foods to avoid, ideas for meals, and how to ensure that children get the nutrients they need for a range of special diets including kosher, halal, dairy and nut allergies and gluten intolerance.

She begins with vegetarians and vegans. Make sure you collect each article in the series for an invaluable guide to providing special diets.
