‘Outdoor playgrounds can be great levellers’

Barry Leahey argues why playgrounds are a force for good and provides tips on applying for funding for playground equipment.

Playgrounds can, and should, become a great leveller in the UK.

As a country, we can act on The State of Child Health report by properly rejuvenating and expanding the UK’s playground provision.

The report found that mental health disorders, weight and poverty were increasing across the board. Both logic and science tell us that public playgrounds are in a unique position to tackle these core factors affecting children’s health, while also being free to access.

Playgrounds give children from all backgrounds, regardless of class, race or ability, a safe space to improve their mental health by connecting with the outdoors and others, lose weight through physical exercise, and improve motor skills through challenging play.
