Welcome to 2025. I am personally very excited about this year as it marks a very special one for Nursery World. The magazine was launched in December 1925, and throughout the next 12 months we will be celebrating our enormous milestone with a range of coverage designed to be thought-provoking, insightful and entertaining.
It will culminate at the end of the year with a collectable, special anniversary supplement.
Delving back into our archive provides fascinating perspectives on how prescribed views and approaches to early childhood have shifted over the decades.
It holds a mirror up to not just the lives of young children but to that of women and their status in society. There is much to inspire and fascinate – and to make us think about how much has changed in a broader sense.
Across NW’s many column inches it is possible to track a clear pathway to the values of early childhood and early education we hold today. With this in mind, each month we will be running a rolling A-Z of contemporary topics, explored through the lens of both the past (through archive extracts) and ideas on where we go from here.
We have started with ‘A’ is for agenda and I’m delighted that for this, Professor Cathy Nutbrown has written a powerful call to action. On page 35 she highlights what has been gained and what has recently been lost in the sector. Food for thought indeed.
We have also introduced a column, ‘Memories of my nursery’ (page 31). I’m looking forward to different sector personalities, including children’s book authors and media folk, providing a light-hearted and often quirky take on this subject. There will be more to follow for our birthday, and more to talk about as the year goes on, so watch this space!
Meanwhile, I would like to wish all our readers a very happy New Year.
