Encourage list writing and recognition of print in the environment.

Resources

Packages and cartons, writing and drawing materials, resources for a shopping area, for example, a table, food packages and toys, play money, advertising displays, open/closed signs.

Preparation

* Keep those packages and cartons coming in!

* Photocopy some recognisable brand names and labels, such as Weetabix and Heinz beans and display these around a writing area and leave others out on the table.

* Set up the shopping area.

Play suggestions

* Encourage the children to write shopping lists using the print around them for reference. They can then take their lists to the nursery 'shop'.

* Provide phones (don't forget 'mobiles') so they can also phone in their order.

* Shows awareness of food items and comments appropriately

* Produces letter-like marks

* 'Reads' their marks as a list

* Produces mix of letter strings and words

* Identifies packages from logos as well as pictures

* Reads logos and print accurately including numbers/prices

* Writes words legibly with increasingly correct letter formation

* Uses conventional list format

* Sustains role-play for lengthy periods.
