Wages to live on

I'm glad that someone has thought about the issue of affordable housing for nursery nurses ('Nursery staff need homes', 1 April). Our wages are so low that we can't afford to get our foot on the property ladder, yet our job is such an important one. We care for children in the first few years of their lives and we should be paid the wage we are worth.

I feel we are as important as doctors and nurses because children gain their first life experiences from us underpaid nursery nurses. I enjoy my job, and while I never entered it caring about the money, there is only so long that I can continue.

How can you even think of moving out or starting a family on only 11,000 a year for doing 40 hours per week?
