Garden historian Caroline Holmes digs up 2,000 years of unusual gardening tips. Written gardening advice in Britain began with medieval monks who cultivated both physical and spiritual sustenance. The first manual aimed at the domestic gardener appeared in 1563 and included tips such as dragging a seal skin around the garden to stop lightning damage.

'Making Tracks with Simon and Matt'

'Blue Peter' presenters Simon Thomas and Matt Baker continue their music series for younger children with pieces from Hungary, Madagascar and the US, music about animals, some music Mozart wrote when he was seven, music to evokes images of dancing snow and some about windmills.

A lighthearted story by John Goldsworth, in which family politics come into play over the naming of a first grandchild.

'Speaking in Tongues'

(Channel 4, 7.55 to 8pm)

Nigerian-born Josephine Adedipe returned to education for a 'Support your child with learning' course. She helped produce a book of fairytales in languages including English, Yoruba, Vietnamese and Thai, and realised she had a talent for storytelling. As a result she is now training to be a classroom assistant, supporting children who might be struggling in class and working with children whose mother tongue is not English.
