Training Today Editorial

Earlier this month Catherine Ashton, Sure Start minister, who is responsible for early years and childcare in England, spoke of her vision for Britain's early years workforce. She told the Education and Skills Select Committee that what the Government has got to offer people who work in the childcare sector 'is the opportunity to develop and grow their qualifications'. Baroness Ashton envisages a career ladder where a childminder may decide to become a teacher, a nursery manager or even an engineer - and have the means to do so. Her aspiration is to see the Government 'produce something that will survive long beyond us ... proper integrated support for families which supports our children and their mums and dads to enable them to do what they want'. But Baroness Ashton's vision will only be realised by empowering all early years professionals. I hope this edition of Training Today will help to achieve this laudable aim.
