A nursery where a ten-month-old girl choked to death on a piece of apple has received an Ofsted rating of 'inadequate' six months after the tragedy.

Just Learning Nursery in Cambourne, Cambridgeshire, was served a compliance notice following a routine inspection on 11 October. The report judged both the safety and organisation of the nursery to be inadequate while all other areas were satisfactory, including nursery education.

Georgia Hollick's death from asphyxiation was ruled accidental by an inquest earlier this month (News, 9 November). Her mother told the jury that she had complained to nursery manager Julie Haynes about the way Georgia was fed days before her death. Mrs Haynes has since resigned.

Inspectors criticised the nursery's meal times and reported that 'at times children's food is not served appropriately'.

'Although suitable policies, procedures and documentation are in place to record accidents and pass information on to parents, staff do not consistently follow the procedures, which means accidents are not always recorded and parents are not always informed if their child has, for example, a bump on the head,' said the report.

Jonathan Bell, managing director of Just Learning, said, 'While the Ofsted report notes many positive aspects of the nursery's care we are challenging parts of it, which are based on a member of staff failing to follow procedures which were rectified as soon as the nursery management were made aware.'

An Ofsted spokesman said, 'The outcome of this inspection was judged as Inadequate: category 2. We have served a compliance notice which requires the registered person to make improvements in order to meet the national standards. The nursery remains qualified for registration, but we will review this situation if it fails to make the necessary improvements.

'We will carry out the next inspection of the nursery within three to six months of the October 2006 inspection. We may visit the nursery again before thatif we have cause to do so.'
