In Professional Nanny's annual survey of nannies' earnings in January it was noted that there is a growing demand from employers for part-time rather than full-time childcare. Besides the families who need before-and after-school care, many more professional mothers now prefer to spend one or more days a week at home. As most of the nannies working for them are younger women who need to earn a full-time living, many of them have to have two jobs in order to survive financially.
When I talked to the nannies I found that in London they have no problem finding families to fill up the spare working hours, but in other parts of the country they may have to be more resourceful or flexible. However, I was surprised to discover how many part-time jobs there are in childcare, which just shows the expansion of its career options.
