Talk to us, Ofsted

I am responding to the letter from Keith Lloyd of Ofsted regarding its report Reception year: Teaching literacy and mathematics (22 November), and the earlier story about Ofsted's report on the literacy and numeracy hours (8 November). As the early years practitioner elected to represent Early Education's members, I am merely the mouthpiece for the many confused members including parents, governors and decision makers, as well as those who work in a wide variety of early years settings. I am heartened that Mr Lloyd has instigated the opportunity for closer working between Ofsted and Early Education.

I would welcome a meeting between our elected representatives and the early years specialists in Ofsted's primary division. As early years consultant Margaret Edgington outlines in her 'In my view' ('Learning, not teaching', 22 November), the significant questions that this report poses and how they square with Ofsted's own document 'Inspecting Subjects 3 to 11' is interesting. The debate will be timely.
