Open University Specialist Teacher Assistant Certificate course is a distance learning undergraduate level 1 course worth 60 credit points, aimed at teaching assistants working in primary schools.
Candidates
Students must be working at least one day a week as a teaching assistant or volunteer in primary schools in England.
Outcomes
It is a way of obtaining a specialist qualification while working full-or part-time. Some students go on to do a degree and/or teacher training.
Content and costs
The course focuses on how children learn and supporting strategies, including supporting the Literacy and Numeracy strategies, ICT and science. Students have weekly topics to do. Most tasks are done in the workplace, the remainder in a paired placement. Students have the support of a mentor, usually their class teacher.
