Position: Area SENCO/specialist early years teacher for WarwickshireCounty Council
- What does working as an Area SENCO involve?
My role is very diverse and interesting. I observe and assess pre-schoolchildren with behaviour, speech and language problems and meet staff andparents to review their case. The summer months are the busiest, as abig part of the job is helping make children's transition from nurseryto school as smooth as possible. I also run courses to help supportpractitioners and work as a mentor for people doing the early yearsdegree.
- How long have you worked as an Area SENCO?
For the last seven years. Previously I was headteacher for ten years attwo different infant schools. I loved my job but it was 24/7 and Ididn't really have the opportunity to follow individual children'sprogress.
- What do you hope to achieve in the future?
I did a BA degree in Early Years and am hoping to do my master's. In thecoming year I will be helping to roll out the Inclusion DevelopmentProgramme in Warwickshire.
