Scottish schools take care over foot and mouth

* Special measures have been introduced in schools and nursery classes in Dumfries and Galloway, the only part of Scotland where cases of foot and mouth had been confirmed as Nursery World went to press. Dumfries and Galloway has 22 confirmed cases, and the local council has introduced precautions to prevent children living in rural areas from spreading the disease, although it has said that the area's 116 primary schools and 16 secondary schools will remain open in the present circumstances.

Schools within a 16-kilometre radius of confirmed outbreaks have been given disinfectant mats and children living on farms are being advised to take an extra pair of shoes to change into at school. School uniform rules have been relaxed for farm-based families who may wash school clothes daily. The guidelines said, 'While we are sympathetic to parents who wish to keep children at home, parents should be encouraged to send them to school.'
