Almost two-thirds of people with epilepsy in the UK have never been told of the potential risks of the condition, a survey by the National Society for Epilepsy has found. The survey, published to coincide with National Epilepsy Week (16 to 22 May), also found that more than half of those had never discussed the side-effects of their medication with either their GP or consultant. The NSE has produced a leaflet for parents and carers that explains what epilepsy is and looks at the various causes in children. Epilepsy: A guide for parents and carers covers aspects of diagnosis, treatment and management of the condition. It includes ways of reducing the risk of seizures and draws attention to practical safety issues. For more information, see the website www.epilepsynse.org.uk or call the helpline on 01494 601400.
