QCA plans to extend APEL

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has confirmed that it is poised to extend the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning), the fast-track level 3 certificate, quelling fears among awarding bodies and providers that it would end next year. A QCA spokesman denied reports that a deadline of 31 January 2006 had been set for candidates to register for APEL, which is designed for unqualified practitioners who have extensive knowledge of the early years and childcare sector.

A QCA spokesman denied reports that a deadline of 31 January 2006 had been set for candidates to register for APEL, which is designed for unqualified practitioners who have extensive knowledge of the early years and childcare sector.

Susan Brakewell, operations manager at the Council for Awards in Children's Care and Education (CACHE), said the awarding body had applied for an extension of the award to the Sector Skills Council and the QCA and was awaiting a response. She added that 637 candidates had registered through CACHE and 376 of them had achieved it so far.
