Children at Perth College Nursery can rest in style on a new wrought-iron bench in their outdoor play area, thanks to the inmates of a nearby prison.

A group of prisoners from Castle Huntly Prison designed and built the big, brightly-coloured seat for the nursery grounds under a scheme to encourage inmates to develop their skills and sense of self-worth while helping members of the local community.

Nursery co-ordinator Elizabeth Honeymansaid, 'The children thoroughly enjoy sitting and climbing on the seat. It is so big that on occasion six children are to be found sitting there, chatting and enjoying the sunshine. In wet weather, the seat gathers raindrops which the young ones take great delight in splashing.'

It is envisaged that the seat will eventually find a home among the trees in the adjacent woodland area at the back of the nursery, which is to be developed with a grant from Scottish National Heritage. Students from the college's horticulture department will provide the labour.

The prisoners brought the seat to the nursery and said that they are willing to make anything else the children and staff require. The next thing on Mrs Honeyman's list is holders for hanging flower baskets.
