Pre-school teachers in Scotland now number 1,733

Pre-school teachers in Scotland now number 1,733, according to figures released by the Scottish Executive last week. In the September 2003 census of publicly-funded schools, the total number of teachers in primary, secondary and special schools was 49,230, which is 818 fewer than in 2002. There were 22,321 teachers in primary schools (22,979 in 2002), giving a pupil: teacher ratio of 18:2 (18:0 in 2002). Among primary school teachers, 93 per cent were female and 11 per cent worked part time. The number of teachers reflects falling pupil rolls and is broadly in line with the Executive's projections.
