Positive role models only a click away

Early years settings in Scotland can now benefit from an online career education tool that aims to challenge gender stereotypes in the workplace. Career Box, originally launched last year on CD-Rom by Careers Scotland, aims to introduce children as young as three to positive working role models, such as a male nursery nurse and female engineer. It has now been put online and includes new interactive videos and activities.

Suggested activities include Job Sack, where uniforms are placed in two sacks - stereotypically 'boys' jobs are placed in the pink sack and 'girls'

jobs in the blue. Children put on a uniform and role play with it.

Tricia Campbell, national curriculum advisor for Careers Scotland, said, 'Career Box is not about choosing a career at a young age, it is about challenging stereotypes, interpreting adult roles and introducing children to the idea of employment.'
