Children discovered the joy of playing with words in a project that united communities. Marie Charlton reports A creative writing project involving two schools in St Helens has helped to develop the pupils' awareness of rhythm, rhyme and phonics and kindled a love of poetry among the children.

A creative writing project involving two schools in St Helens has helped to develop the pupils' awareness of rhythm, rhyme and phonics and kindled a love of poetry among the children.

Rastafarian poet Levi Tafari, who had been involved in an earlier creative project in St Helens, returned to work with the children of St Austin's RC Primary School and Eccleston Mere Primary School in four sessions over two weeks.

First, the children composed individual acrostic poems based on their names, which helped increase their awareness of letters within their names.

The children were very proud of their poems and wanted to read them again and again with practitioners.
