Supporting Special Needs: Understanding inclusion in the early years by Penny Tassoni (Heinemann, 12.99, 01865 314346)

This book is another in the very good professional development series from Heinemann and is of the high standard you would expect from Penny Tassoni.

She has obviously researched the subject thoroughly and read widely, and the result is a well-organised, well-written and reader-friendly book. It has good tables and diagrams, illustrations, case studies, thought-provoking questions and practical activities to try.

The book follows the usual format of a generalised special needs book, with chapters on the key issues involved in and the concept of inclusion, implementing the SEN Code of Practice, working with parents, writing an inclusive policy, planning Individual Education Plans, and so on.

There are also chapters dealing with supporting children with special needs in relation to the various areas of an early years curriculum, and there are useful practical ideas and activity suggestions.

The final chapter deals with some common medical conditions that early years practitioners are likely to encounter in their work, offering useful information.

I enjoyed reading the book and can recommend it to anybody looking for a good, down-to-earth general book as part of their special needs professional library.
