Reviewed by Jennie Lindon, child psychologist and early years consultant Some years ago Cath Arnold gave us Child development and learning: Georgia's story. Now, we have Observing Harry. The author has done an excellent job of bringing alive the intriguing steps of young learning. She uses observational evidence to show that vital early learning really happens through the medium of relaxed play, social interaction, two-way conversation and the ordinary life of a child.
The author is grandmother to Georgia and Harry, as well as having professional expertise within Pen Green Centre. She shows that affectionate involvement with young children is compatible with alert, professional watching and listening. As a reader, you feel confident that Harry matters - his feelings, interests and wishes. He is never an object of observation.
