- Outstanding party

Great Oakley Pre-school in Essex organised a party to celebrate being rated outstanding by Oftsed. The inspector's report commented on the setting's programme of exciting and imaginative activities and thehigh-quality personal, social and academic skills children acquire from being at the pre-school.

- Down on the farm

Pre-school children from Alphabet House Day Nursery in Lowdham, Nottinghamshire, visited Gonalston Farm Shop to enjoy a deli tasting session and to learn about where different meats come from. They also went to work on a colouring competition, and their entries have been put on display at the farm shop. Four-year-old Tyler Weldon was declared the winner and was presented with some Easter goodies.

- Outstanding farm

Brue Farm Day Nursery in Castle Cary, Somerset, has been rated outstanding by Ofsted in its latest inspection. Owner Katherine Farthing said, 'We are delighted with our Ofsted result, which is down to the brilliant team who work at the nursery. Over the next few months we hope to be able to offer forest school sessions.'

- Over the hills

Children from Lincolnshire Montessori donned their weatherproof gear to take part in a charity hill walk to raise money for families affected by the earthquake in Haiti. They collected a total of 500.

- Kitchen stars

Leapfrog Day Nursery in Milton Keynes has been awarded five stars by Milton Keynes Council Environmental Health Office in recognition of its high standard of cleanliness and safety in the kitchen. Nursery manager Julie Bolton said, 'We are very proud to receive five stars, and it's great that the nursery staff have been recognised for all their hard work.'

- All fired up

Children at Little Acorns Day Nursery in Gomersal, West Yorkshire, were visited by fire fighters from Cleckheaton fire station, after they had shown an interest in fire role play. Senior practitioner Claire Codd said, 'The children had great fun trying on fire helmets and sitting in the fire engine. Then the fire fighters asked the children to draw pictures for them.'

Springtime colour

More early years settings that celebrated Easter in colourful style include Nursery on the Green in Frimley Green, Surrey, (top left) and Miss Polly's Kindergarten, Baughurst, Hampshire, which held bonnet competitions. Children at Haven Nursery, Portsmouth, attended an Easter service organised by the Salvation Army, and had an egg hunt and an egg and spoon race.

Children at Happy Child Nursery in Harlesden, London, found out that the egg came before the chicken when they spent two weeks feeding and caring for baby chicks. Nursery manager Kim Cobham said, 'Watching the chicks hatch and having them at nursery was a great experience for the children and staff.'
