World Book Day
Early years settings across the country made the most of World Book Dayon 3 March.
At Nursery on the Green in Frimley Green, Surrey, staff organised apirate-themed day, including a treasure hunt and role play. Dressing upas their favourite storybook characters was the order of the day forchildren at Melton Mowbray Nursery School in Leicestershire, Happy ChildNursery in Shepherd's Bush, London, Scallywags Day Nursery in Cambridge,and Wetherby Day Nursery in Leeds.
At The Old Station Nursery at Lincoln College and the setting at theMarina, Lincoln, they all shared their favourite stories.
Little Acorns in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, welcomed a local librarianwho read stories and sang songs with the children, something alsoenjoyed at Sparklers Nursery in Dumfries and Galloway.
Oakwood School in Chichester, West Sussex, were visited by author IsabelAshdown, who judged the school's annual poetry competition entries.Little Foot Day Nursery near Halifax, West Yorkshire, had a visit fromactor Ben Faulks, who plays Mr Bloom in the CBeebies programme 'MrBloom's Nursery'. He read the children four of their favouritestories.
Children from Chalfont St Peter Montessori Nursery in Buckinghamshirelearned about what authors and illustrators do.
St David's Day
Children at Alphabet House nursery in West Bridgford, Nottingham, markedSt David's Day on 1 March by paying a return visit to Nottinghamshire'scommunity gardener Rachel Hemmings, who came to the nursery in November.Ms Hemmings talked to the children about the daffodils growing in hergarden and invited them to help collect eggs from the chickens and waterher plants. The children also enjoyed a picnic of traditional Welshfood. Nursery manager Lisa Palin said, 'As well as learning about StDavid's Day, this visit gave us the chance to talk about gardening andthe environment.'

Rainford Pre-School and Playgroup in Rainford, Merseyside, took part inI CAN's Chatterbox Challenge by joining the world record attempt for thelargest game of 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes'. Deputy manager TinaFairclough said, 'Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event. Parents,grandparents and the local headmaster all came to support us on theday.'
