Reaching out for brake
Sunbeams Day Nursery in Leeds raised 185 for the road awarenesscharity Brake on Beep Beep Day with a raffle, a cake stall and facepainting. PC Lloyd Peatfield drew out a mini road with traffic lightsand zebra crossings, and children practised holding hands crossing,putting on their seatbelts and asking their parents to slow down.
25 years on
The nursery at an independent school in Edinburgh celebrated its silveranniversary with a party for pupils past and present. George Watson'sCollege Nursery opened in September 1982 and has educated over 700children.

From nursery to centre
Strong Close Nursery School in Bradford becomes a designated children'scentre this week. The 49-place nursery is a partnership between thenursery school and the Pre-school Learning Alliance, catering forchildren from birth to five years and offering services including speechand language therapy and parent fitness groups.

Wash those hands
Threadworm Action Week from 5 November will focus on hand hygiene. Fortyper cent of children under ten will get threadworm at some stage andhandwashing is a major preventative method. The Parents, Early Years and Learning (PEAL) programme, led by NCB, hasa new website at www.peal.org.uk. The site aims to act as a forum fordiscussion and sharing good practice on working with parents.
Crocodile smiles
The Stop the Rot campaign has joined forces with the children'stoothbrush makers Oral-B Stages to produce a free resource pack fornurseries. Smile Like A Crocodile packs were developed by Oral-B inpartnership with the National Day Nurseries Association and Stop the Rotfounder Graham Wilding. They include stickers, reward charts, activityguides, an interactive PC game and a Smiley the Crocodile puppet, tohelp teach children about the importance of dental hygiene. Parentleaflets and five Oral-B Stages toothbrushes are also part of the pack,which will be sent to all nurseries registered with the campaign. Tosign up visit www.stop-the-rot.co.uk.

Buried treasure was a highlight of International Talk Like a Pirate Dayat Grasshoppers Day Nursery in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and itssettings in Hertford, St Albans and Birmingham. Children enjoyed gameslike walking the plank and 'pin the beak on the parrot', and the nurseryrooms were re-named Dolphin Island and Jellyfish Reef.
