Majority of schools won't be able to cover their costs next year, warn unions

Findings from the School Cuts coalition suggest that 75 per cent of primary schools and 94 per cent of secondary schools will not be able to make ends meet next year.

It follows the Government’s letter to the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB), which recommends a 2.8 per cent rise in teacher pay for 2025/26, but provided no new funding to cover this.

Schools’ costs are expected to rise by 3.4 per cent next year, but mainstream funding will increase by just 2.2 per cent. This leaves a gap of £700million that the Government would need to increase school funding by to fully fund staff pay awards, according to the Coalition.

The cut in funding will see overall per pupil funding drop to the lowest levels in England in real terms for at least 15 years, according to the research.
