The sector appears divided in its response to Government plans to allow early years settings to include ‘free-flow’ outdoor space as part of the rules governing space requirements for children.

The outdoor space available to children in nursery, pre-school, school and childminding settings could be considered as part of the space requirements in early years settings, if Department for Education (DfE) plans to bring in proposed changes to the EYFS regulations go ahead.

The department has launched a two-month consultation on changes to indoor floor space requirements ahead of the roll-out of the expanded offer in September, as it seeks to increase the number of funded early education places available for parents.
