Letters: Can't top up? Opt out, says childminder

Letter of the week wins 30 worth of children's books.

I want to add my voice to the debate concerning top-up fees for theNursery Education Grant (NEG). Childminders are also adverselyaffected.

I am a childminder, judged as 'outstanding' in all areas by Ofsted. I amwilling, able and motivated to deliver early years education. I havechildren in my care who are able to claim NEG. Yet I am forced to choosenot to provide this service purely on a financial basis, as I am unableto top-up the grant to my usual hourly rate.

Due to my success as a childminder I am able to charge a higher thanaverage rate, meaning the NEG does not cover my fees. I can see noincentive for me to do the extra work and have the extra inspections, when in fact I would be losing money as a result of accepting thegrant.
