Joint forces to tackle poverty in London

A working group bringing together councils and businesses has been set up to reduce child poverty in London.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes and employment minister StephenTimms gave details of the initiative at St Stephen's Children's Centrein Stockwell on Monday.

The London Child Poverty Ministerial Working Group is made up of theGreater London Authority, employers, local authorities, and otherdelivery organisations. It is part of a 125m UK programme of newapproaches to help end child poverty.

St Stephen's has a JobCentre Plus onsite, and this partnership has beensuccessful in getting parents back to work.

The group will look at how to improve projects, schemes and policiesdesigned to maximise opportunities for parents to enter and stay inwork, increase the take-up of existing childcare, financial or othersupport to help parents enter work, and ensure parents have access toflexible working.

The London Childcare Affordability Pilots, or CAPs, will also beextended.

Ms Hughes said, 'Children's centres and extended schools not only offerchildcare for all families, but also bring together other services,making it easier for families to receive the help they need, includingsupport for parents to enter work.'
