Plans are underway to replace nursery provision from the 40-place Battlehill Nursery School in North Shields, which closed at the end of the summer term, with facilities at the primary school which is on the same site. A spokeswoman for North Tyneside Council said the closure was part of a council-wide move towards providing wraparound care. The former Battlehill First School, which took in five to nine-year-olds, is to be upgraded and extended to become Battlehill Primary School, taking in five- to 11-year-olds, with a new reception and nursery class as well as daycare for three-to four-year-olds. While the new premises are being built children are to be housed in mobile classrooms. 'We have been through a major consultation exercise, which has been fairly uncontroversial because there will be 100 per cent nursery provision and no loss of anything,' the spokeswoman added.
