Generous saint

People are too caught up in the argument about whether we are lying to children about Father Christmas to acknowledge the real story behind the tradition. When children are young there is no harm in the fantasy, but when they get older they should be told that we do it in memory of St Nicholas, who, in the 4th century, gave gifts, usually of gold and silver, to poor children and needy people.

When children are young there is no harm in the fantasy, but when they get older they should be told that we do it in memory of St Nicholas, who, in the 4th century, gave gifts, usually of gold and silver, to poor children and needy people.

This is the real reason we have the character of Father Christmas. It is unfortunate he has become so commercialised.
