The PGCE signifies successful completion of a course of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) for graduates and those with equivalent degree level qualifications leading to Qualified Teacher Status, (QTS) The PGCE Advanced Study of Early Years qualifies students to teach Foundation and Key Stage One. Training bursaries of 6,000, tax-free, are available to PGCE students.

Entrance requirements

The handbook: Qualifying to Teach: Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status and Requirements for Initial Teacher Training is available from the Teacher Training Agency. It details requirements: Applicants need: a good honours degree (2:1 and above); Grade C or above GCSE (or equivalent) in English language and mathematics. People born on or after September 1979 wishing to teach primary level need grade C GCSE science subject.

In England, QTS is subject to skills tests in literacy, numeracy and information and communication technology.

Applications in 2004 can be made online via the Graduate Teaching Training Registry from early this September, the closing date is15 December.
