Accident and emergency courses for early years professionals

Acorn Early Years Training (part of CJ Associates)runs tailor-made courses on:

* Healthy eating for the under-fives. This is a one-day course.

* Safe from harm. This three-day course covers the Children Act 1989, accidents, children's emotional attachment, shaken baby syndrome and child abuse.

* Allergy management. This is a half-day course for anyone who handles and prepares food.

* Sun safety. This two-hour course covers safe-sun practice.

* Allergy and anaphylaxis management. This day course includes food allergies, menu planning, hygiene procedures, anaphylaxis and First Aid.

* Parents and their child's safety. This is a one-day course for new parents on safety in the home and outside.

* First aid for parents. Topics covered include unconscious casualty, bleeding and burns.

* Health and safety in early years care. This day course for managers includes risk assessment, manual handling, fire safety and food hygiene.

* Fire safety.This is a 1.5-hour course for all employees.

* First Aid at work. This is a four-day course.

* First Aid re-qualification. This is a two-day course.

* Paediatric First Aid. This day course leads to appointed person status.

* First Aid in early years. This is a two-day course for staff in daycare settings.

The Child Accident Prevention Trust believes child accidental injury prevention needs to be addressed through changes in the physical environment and attitudes. Its seminars are particularly relevant for Sure Start teams, and include:

* Setting policy and strategies at management level.

* Setting good practice in early years settings.

* Risk assessment for after-school clubs, playschemes, playgroups and nurseries.

Child Care Plus runs nursery workshops, including:

* Paediatric First Aid.

* Level 1 food safety course.

* Principles of manual handling.

Crechendo Training runs day courses in South Kensington and Wandsworth in London on:

* Emergency aid for babies and children. This certified First Aid course provides practitioners with the skills to deal with everyday emergencies.

It also covers life-saving techniques including resuscitation, choking, burns and bleeding. The course is suitable for parents to attend as well as nannies, au pairs and anyone who professionally cares for other people's children.

The City of Bristol College runs a course on:

* Paediatric First Aid. This course is for everyone working with children and young people.

It focuses on First Aid skills and the knowledge needed to help and comfort children involved in accidents.

First AidMedical runs a course in Cleveland on:

* First Aid for nursery nurses. This course is held either on the client's premises or in Billingham, Middlesbrough or Redcar.

Jace Training runs courses on:

* Infant and Child Diploma in First Aid. This course is for all people working with children. It consists of 12 hours of tuition, including lectures, group discussions and video. Topics include the role of the appointed person, health and safety of the environment, the First Aid box, and emergency procedures.

* First Aid at Work. Under the Health and Safety Act 1981, if there are more than five employees, then a qualified First Aider is required. This four-day certified course is for senior personnel within the setting and includes an exam. It covers the role of the first aider, emergency procedures, the recording of injuries, children's injuries, cuts and grazes, foreign bodies, burns and scalds, poisons, fractures and sprains, head wounds, and shock and resuscitation. The certificate is valid for three years.

Maternity and Nanny Training runs a course at the University of Reading on:

* Emergency Paediatric First Aid. This comprehensive half-day course is held on Saturdays, and is suitable for people working with babies and children. It covers resuscitation, choking, burns and bleeding, and other first aid skills needed for the care of babies and young children, and leads to a paediatric First Aid certificate.

The Montessori Centre International has a seminar on:

* Exploring issues around health and safety in the nursery. This seminar encompasses issues relating to children's health and care, including appropriate nutrition and immunisation packages.

The National Day Nurseries Association runs a course on:

* Implementing health and safety in the childcare environment.

The Pre-School Learning Alliance and the National Childminding Association have developed a course on:

* First Aid for those working with children under five. This 12-hour course is in conjunction with the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance.

The Alliance also runs a:

* Health and safety risk assessment course.

The Riverside Early Years Training Centre runs courses in Tynesideon:

* First Aid. This course is for people working with babies and children. It covers causes of unconsciousness, treatment and resuscitation methods, the recovery position, bleeds and burns, head injuries, fractures, and poisons.

* First Aid at work. This course will enable participants to renew or achieve a First Aid certificate.

St John Ambulance's varied First Aid courses include:

* Lifesaver for babies and children, which covers all aspects of emergency First Aid.

* Emergency aid in schools, covering basic First Aid.

* Emergency aid for nursery nurses and childminders.

Safe and Sound provides First Aid and child safety courses for parents, nannies, au pairs and babysitters. Courses for au pairs have been designed for non-native English speakers. Interpreters are available if necessary.

The courses include:

* Lifesaver (three hours).

* Essential First Aid (two hours).

* Au pair.

Tinies Childcare has courses on:

* Paediatric First Aid. This six-hour certified course is for anyone caring for children. It focuses on baby and child resuscitation and will ensure participants are competent to handle any emergency.

* Manual handling. This half-day course is designed for nannies and nursery workers. It covers an introduction to manual handling and the responsibilities under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations.

* Basic health and safety. This six-hour course for nursery workers includes health and safety, accident prevention, First Aid and risk assessment and fire safety.

* Basic food hygiene. This six-hour course covers food poisoning, preventing contamination, hygiene, equipment, pest control and the Food Safety Act 1990.
