Experience counts too

I read with interest Marjorie Ouvry's comments regarding the need for nursery managers to be educated to graduate level (Letters, 20 July). I agree we do not want children to be cared for by 'poorly qualified, but well meaning staff'. However, I do not believe employing graduates as nursery managers is the only option. I am a nursery nurse with more than 20 years experience working in a variety of 'well respected' childcare settings. I have an NNEB and a Diploma in Post Qualifying Studies, and have attended training courses, seminars and discussion sessions. While I do not rest on my professional experience, I feel it has been incredibly useful and rewarding. Throughout my career I have gained many necessary practical skills, including working with parents, attending case conferences, setting up workshops for parents and children, accessing funding and leading a staff team.

I do not consider myself poorly educated because I don't have a degree. I have several childcare qualifications, a real interest in learning and take up training whenever it's available. I also have a kind, caring and friendly nature. These dispositions are just as important as training and skills.

When observing and planning for children it is important to remember that children learn differently, and consolidate their learning in a number of ways. Surely the same could be said of a prospective nursery leader.

It is important to look at the individual and their qualities, expertise, understanding and previous experience, rather than only employ graduates.

When working with members of the public, the skills gained at the 'university of life' can come in handy too!
