A look at some of the elements of music will help give you an idea of the range of questions you can ask children about their music and in particular about their recorded music that they listen to:
* Dynamics - volume. Is it loud? Is it quiet? Do you like the loud part? Is it loud because it is a happy song?
* Tempo - speed. Is it fast? Does it get faster? Is it slow? Is it slow because it sounds like a sad piece of music?
* Texture - the combination of the two or more layers at the same time for example, the combination of fast and slow rhythms. This is difficult for young children to assess, but you could ask them about what sounds stand out.
* Timbre - the atmosphere and emotional temperature of music
Does it sound harsh or smooth? Is it loud and happy? Is it cold? Is it scary? Why? What does it remind you of?
