Early years settings in St Helens, Lancashire are to work with five black and Asian artists following a successful bid for funds from the Arts Council. The artists will work across a range of settings, including a nursery class, a Neighbourhood Nursery, a reception class, a Sure Start programme and a playgroup, for one day a week for six weeks. The artists will hold planning meetings with the settings before starting with the children and celebrate at the end with a performance, an exhibition or a video. A spokeswoman for St Helens borough council said, 'While the arts are taken to the very early years in many European countries, this ideal is often not realised here, for varying reasons. By giving children rich experiences of the visual and performing arts we feed their imagination and creativity, which is essential in the early years if children are to retain the creative potential so often lost in later years.'
