Early childhood services ‘out of reach’ for families in poverty

Families living in poverty are missing out on critical support as they struggle to access early childhood services, finds a new report.

According to the research by the NSPCC and UNICEF UK, early childhood services are often limited, hard to reach, under resourced or unable to support the needs of families experiencing financial hardship.

It finds that along with a shortage of midwives and health visitors, which puts professionals under ‘huge amounts of pressure’, parents often struggle to attend services due to transport costs, not being able to navigate complicated services or an inability to follow advice due to a lack of money or resources.

However, the report highlights that being able to access these services can significantly reduce the inequalities faced by children from low-income families.
