Don't pay for police checks, carers told

Daycare providers in England and Wales have been told they are not to pay any money to the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) to register with it. The National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) has instructed its members to ignore any correspondence sent by the CRB asking them to pay a 300 one-off registration fee and 12 per member of staff to check them against its Disclosure service.

The National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) has instructed its members to ignore any correspondence sent by the CRB asking them to pay a 300 one-off registration fee and 12 per member of staff to check them against its Disclosure service.

NDNA chief executive Rosemary Murphy said, 'One of our members rang us in a panic after receiving an unsolicited pack from the CRB with a letter asking for 300 to register the day nursery and for it to pay an additional Pounds 12 per worker for police checks.

'We contacted the Bureau and were told it was sending out the packs in order to get day nurseries to register with it - even though we know Ofsted is in charge of registration.'
