David Bell's appointment as the new head of Ofsted was confirmed last week following a meeting by the Privy Council. Last month, education secretary Estelle Morris said she was recommending his appointment (News, 17 January). He joins Ofsted on 22 April and on 1 May will take over from Mike Tomlinson as Her Majesty's chief inspector of schools. Mr Tomlinson will then become chair-designate of the body being set up to deliver education services in the troubled north London borough of Hackney. Meanwhile, in Wales, Susan Lewis has been reappointed as chief inspector of education and training at Estyn, the Welsh equivalent of Ofsted, for a further five-year period from 1 June.
