Cooking up the curriculum

* Parents and practitioners should make the most of the learning opportunities provided by cooking with, rather than for, young children, says a new book from Early Education. Jane Khan, author of More than Cooking, writes from experience as a nursery head and highlights how cooking with children can develop their independence and self-confidence, and enhance their understanding as they shop for ingredients, prepare food and eat it with others. She emphasises that cooking in an early years setting is a useful way of learning about traditions in a diverse community.

The book contains recipes and guidance on how cooking can fulfil each of the learning areas of the curriculum. It costs 5 (plus 50p p&p) from Early Education, 36 Cavell Street, London E1 2JA.
