Material squares needle and thread coloured items cardboard box paint Step by step

* Collect squares of plain material of the same size, about 25cm x 25cm. Use six colours such as red, blue, green, yellow, black and white.

* Sew or tape the squares together to form a mat. Sheets of coloured card can be used if no material is available.

* Ask the children to collect various objects to match the colours from around the classroom.

* Paint a cardboard box with the six colours used on the mat and store the mat and all the matching items inside.

* Choose four children to play the game. Spread the mat out on the floor.

* Hold the box high so that the children can not see inside, and ask them to take it in turns to choose an item from the box. They then place the object on the correct colour on the mat.

* Encourage discussion and repetition of the colour names by the children as they decide where to place the item. The children should soon realise that the objects are not an exact match but that the same colours can come in many different shades.

* For older children make another mat introducing colours such as brown, orange, pink or grey.
