Captain Duck. by Jez Alborough. (Collins, 9.99)

This is a vivacious book about a slightly dastardly character called Captain Duck, who causes mayhem wherever he goes. The text is written in rhyming couplets throughout the book, and comic-strip style pictures help to convey the pace of the adventure.

The only place where the artist has used a double-page spread for a single picture is at the most dramatic point in the story, where the animals are being pitched about in a small boat surrounded by giant, shadowy waves - 'And there upon the restless deep, three lost friends fall fast asleep.'
