Call for tax policy to include nannies

A body representing nanny agencies has criticised the Government for excluding nannies from its childcare plans. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), which represents many nanny agencies in England, has accused the Government of unfairly discriminating against nannies and the families employing them by excluding them from its proposed national rating system of day nurseries, childminders, pre-schools and playgroups.

The REC called on the Government to give tax benefits to families employing nannies and urged it to consider lifting what it sees as the amount of red tape surrounding the hiring of nannies.

Peter Cullimore, chair of the REC childcare division, said that while he welcomed the Government's proposed rating system, home-based childcare was being ignored.
