Changes in the law regarding natural mineral water come into force at the end of 2003 and companies selling bottled water will be able to claim it is suitable for use in the preparation of infant feeds. Waters that are suitable for children will be able to display this information on their labels, but the government will continue to recommend that all water is boiled and cooled before being used to prepare infant feed. Also, only still water, not sparkling, should be used for babies and young children. Whether or not you choose to alter practice in the light of these changes, you may wish to take advantage of a free booklet from the Natural Mineral Water Information service which details fluid requirements for children of different ages, explains the role of minerals in diet and the difference between different waters.
